A review of players who have surpassed 100 wins in a single Grand Slam: The Wimbledon King Federer

The four Grand Slams are unquestionably the grandest arena for tennis players to demonstrate their talent, and many athletes dream of stepping onto this stage from a young age.

Simply appearing there is already an achievement, yet some players have managed to earn over 100 wins in a single Grand Slam, which is truly admirable. Starting today, I will gradually share stories about those players who have reached this milestone in individual Grand Slam events.

At the forefront is Federer, who has elevated tennis to new heights. Federer has surpassed 100 wins at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon; today, I will tell the legendary story of his achievements at the All England Club.

Federer made his debut at the All England Club in 1999, where he lost in the first round after a five-set battle. The following year, he was again ousted in the first round, this time by the fifth seed Kafelnikov. Despite his best efforts and three tiebreak sets, he ultimately fell to the in-form opponent.

In 2001, Federer finally broke through, defeating grass-court king Sampras in a five-set quarterfinal, sparking high hopes for the ponytailed young player. However, he then lost in straight sets with tiebreaks to home favorite Henman, showing he still lacked the ability to close out critical matches.

In 2002, the Swiss player, having won his first Masters title, was expected to take another step forward, but unexpectedly he was upset in the first round by Croatian rising star Ancic.

From 2003 to 2007, Federer entered his era of dominance, making a spectacular breakthrough and winning the challenger’s trophy for five consecutive years. During this period, he defeated top players like Roddick and Nadal twice in finals, as well as other stars such as Hewitt, Safin, and Ferrero.

In 2008, the only player to defeat Federer at Wimbledon was Nadal, who bravely dethroned the grass-court king. This match, hailed as one of the greatest in history, ended with the Spaniard victorious, halting Federer’s 41-match winning streak at Wimbledon.

In 2009, Federer made a strong comeback, winning a long final set battle against Roddick; however, in 2010 and 2011, he was defeated by Berdych and Tsonga, players who mostly played the role of supporting cast during their careers, failing to reach the semifinals.

In 2012, Federer lifted the trophy by defeating Djokovic in the semifinals and Murray in the final, marking his last Grand Slam victory over Djokovic.

After winning his seventh Wimbledon title, Federer suffered a setback the following year, losing in the second round to an unheralded opponent who won three consecutive tiebreaks in an upset.

Thereafter, Federer lost three Wimbledon finals to Djokovic and was also beaten by Canadian Raonic and South African Anderson. His last Wimbledon loss came when he was physically unwell, losing 0-6, 0-6 to Hurkacz. Such a farewell to Wimbledon evokes a sigh for a fading hero. Federer’s Wimbledon record stands at 105 wins and 14 losses.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Luo Cheng Qiye)
