Rune disclosed on social media that his proximal Achilles tendon is completely torn, and he is scheduled for surgery this week.
In last week's ATP250 Stockholm semifinal, Rune tearfully informed the physiotherapist that he heard his Achilles tendon snap, leading to his retirement at 6-4/2-2.
“It will take a long time before I can be back on the court. The recovery will be challenging. I have experienced so much joy on the court, and the thought of not feeling that energy for a long time is unbearable. My proximal Achilles tendon is fully ruptured, which means I need surgery this week, followed by rehabilitation. I am very grateful for your comfort and support now and always. Without you, everything would be different. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon!” Rune wrote.
This injury likely means Rune will be away from competition for an extended period, and when he returns, he will need to use protected ranking to enter tournaments.
This season, Rune has achieved a 36-22 singles record, won the ATP500 title in Barcelona, finished runner-up at the ATP1000 Indian Wells Masters, and reached the round of 16 at both the Australian Open and French Open.
