Djokovic Withdraws from Paris Masters, Remaining Schedule: Secures ATP Finals Spot, First Match in Athens

At the close of the 2025 tennis season, Djokovic’s adjustment to his schedule has sparked renewed interest. The 38-year-old tennis legend announced via social media on October 21 that he will withdraw from next week’s Paris Masters (October 27 to November 2). This marks his second consecutive year missing this ATP 1000 event since 2024, two seasons after his record-breaking seventh title there in 2023.

In a message to Paris fans, Djokovic did not specify the reason for his withdrawal but began with “Dear Paris,” recalling past memories:

“Dear Paris, over the years I have created many wonderful memories here and achieved great success, especially winning this tournament seven times. Looking forward to seeing you again next year. Thank you (Merci).”

This heartfelt farewell also confirmed earlier predictions—given Djokovic’s cautious schedule management over the past two seasons, he was widely expected not to compete at this year’s indoor hardcourt event in Paris.

The withdrawal news comes just three days after Djokovic’s unexpected retirement from the “Six Kings Slam” exhibition match. During the third-place match in Riyadh against Fritz, he withdrew due to physical issues, revealing his scheduling philosophy: “I need rest now to address some physical matters, then I hope to participate in the last few tournaments of the season. Let’s wait and see.”

Now, the outline of those “last few tournaments” is becoming clearer. Djokovic has confirmed participation in the inaugural Athens ATP 250 tournament, held from November 2 to 8, immediately after the Paris Masters, serving as a key event for him to fine-tune his form at season’s end. More notably, the ATP Finals will take place in Turin from November 9 to 16, where Djokovic has already secured a spot. In his previous 18 appearances (2025 marks his 18th, tying Federer’s record), he has won seven titles, earning him the undisputed title of “record king” at this event. However, it is worth noting that although he qualified last year, he chose to strategically skip it, so whether he will appear as planned this year remains to be confirmed.

Throughout the 2025 season, Djokovic has maintained a restrained competition pace. Earlier this month’s Shanghai Masters was only his 12th ATP event this year. This “step back to move forward” approach has allowed him to stay competitive at Grand Slams (reaching all Grand Slam semifinals this year) while conserving energy for crucial late-season battles—whether at his debut in Athens or aiming to defend his record at the ATP Finals, the legend continues to write the closing chapters of his career at his own pace.
