ATP Basel: Fonseca Defeats Davidovich Fokina to Win First ATP 500 Title

On October 26 local time, the 2025 ATP 500 Basel tournament wrapped up with Brazilian newcomer Fonseca claiming a straight-sets victory of 6-3, 6-4 over Spanish contender Davidovich Fokina, marking his first ATP 500 title. This represents Fonseca’s second career title (following Buenos Aires earlier this year), while Davidovich Fokina suffered his fifth consecutive singles final loss on the tour, still seeking his first crown. In men’s doubles, top seeds Granollers and Zeballos triumphed over Pavlasek and Jebliński 6-2, 7-5 to claim the title.

Fonseca showcased excellent form by eliminating defending champion Pericard in the opening round; subsequently, he benefited from the withdrawals of 7th seed Menchik and 9th seed Shapovalov. In the semifinals, he defeated Munar in straight sets. In the final, Fonseca quickly took control from the start, and despite Davidovich Fokina’s resilient fightback, Fonseca secured the first set 6-3. In the second set, Fonseca dominated the match and sealed the victory with a backhand winner at 6-4, lifting the highest-level trophy of his career to date.

Thanks to his outstanding performance this week, earning 500 ranking points and €471,825 in prize money, Fonseca will break into the top 30 in the world rankings for the first time, reaching a career-high No. 28 in the upcoming update. After the match, Fonseca said, “My parents flew in from Brazil; they originally planned to go to Paris but changed plans just an hour before the tournament started to come to Basel. Winning this biggest title in front of them is amazing. They have always believed in me. When I considered quitting professional tennis to go to college, they said, ‘It’s your choice, and we’ll support you no matter what.’ I’m incredibly grateful to them. My mom has traveled with me to tournaments worldwide since I was 11, and I dedicate this title to her!”
