Southeast Asia's top tennis player secures a decisive victory over legend Venus Williams

The young Filipino star has become an intriguing phenomenon in the tennis world over the past year.

The Filipino tennis player - Alexandra Eala started the 2026 season smoothly by teaming up with Iva Jovic to overcome two highly experienced and skilled opponents: Venus Williams and Elina Svitolina in the women's doubles event at the ASB Classic held in Auckland, New Zealand today, January 5.

The Philippines-USA duo overcame a major challenge with a 7-6 (9-7 in the tie-break); 6-1 win, eliminating Williams and Gael Monfils’ wife from the tournament. This was considered one of the most surprising upsets in the women's doubles at this year's Auckland Open, given the clear age and experience gap between the pairs.

The opening set saw an intense battle for points. Venus Williams, aged 45, along with Svitolina, used their experience and game control to create many tough situations for the younger opponents. However, Eala (20 years old) and Jovic (18 years old) demonstrated commendable composure by staying focused, saving multiple break-points, and winning the tense tie-break.

After surviving the pressure of the first set, Eala and Jovic dominated the second set. Their fast-paced play, agile movement, and strong teamwork allowed the teenage pair to easily secure points. Eala and Jovic repeatedly earned break-points and closed the set with a commanding 6-1 score, officially sending Venus Williams and Elina Svitolina out early in the doubles event.

This victory not only reflects the result but also highlights the rapid development of these two young players. Eala, a major hope for Philippine tennis, continues to establish her rising status on the international stage, while Jovic shows the potential expected of one of America's future tennis talents.

In the next round, Eala and Jovic will await the winner of the match between the top-seeded pair Asia Muhammad/Erin Routliffe and the duo Jesika Maleckova/Renata Zarazua.

Besides doubles, Alexandra Eala will continue her journey in the women's singles event. According to the schedule, Southeast Asia's number one player will compete tomorrow morning Vietnam time against Donna Vekic, who won the silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
