Gauff's double fault reason found, urgent post-match response; Ziwei broken by Hurka, netizens say she can't accept defeat

Today brought a huge surprise at the United Cup, where two-time Grand Slam winner and American tennis star Gauff was surprisingly defeated 1-6, 7-6(3), 0-6 by Spain’s Manero, the biggest upset since the event started.

“What’s wrong with Gauff?” is a question many fans are asking. From a sweeping victory in her first match to committing 14 double faults and 50+ unforced errors today, Gauff’s performance was like night and day. Many speculate that her recent controversial remarks might have contributed to this shocking loss.

A few days ago, when asked if the US team had strong support, Gauff bluntly said, “Honestly, no. In tennis, I think our (US team’s) fan support is the worst.” Her comment sparked heated debate, and many American netizens quickly attacked her social media accounts with criticism and doubt.

Under public pressure, Gauff had to clarify after her loss, stating that her words were taken out of context and she never expected everyone to spend money specifically to watch players’ matches.

She further explained that while many events have American spectators present, compared to fans from smaller countries who show passionate support with flags and matching outfits, American fans tend to be more reserved.

“This is just my personal observation,” Gauff said. “Please believe me, I fully understand the economic realities and that tennis isn’t something everyone can easily participate in.”

In response to the controversy, Gauff’s teammate Fritz also defended her: “I was sitting right next to her and completely understood what Coco meant and wanted to express. She was right.”

Fritz stated on social media that Gauff’s remarks were never meant to disrespect American fans. He gave an example: if the US team plays against Czechia or Poland at the United Cup, the opposing fans would also passionately support their own players.

“We love the Americans who come out to support us. Some other countries do have a very intense sports culture, but we appreciate every American watching abroad,” Fritz added.

Gauff also admitted after the match that her problems today were more “emotional” and “mental,” but she was reluctant to elaborate further, which only fueled speculation that her controversial comments affected her performance.

On the same day, another match at the United Cup drew attention. Polish player Hurkacz returned from injury to crush world No. 3 German Zverev 6-3, 6-4, securing the second point for Poland.

Previously, Hurkacz underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and had been out of official competition for seven months, dropping to No. 83 in the rankings. This former world No. 6 and two-time ATP Finals participant showed excellent form, serving 21 aces in 10 service games against Zverev and facing only one break point.

The match also featured a dramatic moment: an emotionally frustrated Zverev smashed his racket during the match. After the first set, he complained to his father, “Why can’t I serve? That guy hasn’t played for two years but serves at 230 km/h. And it’s at night, cold, damn, it’s crazy.”

Regarding Zverev’s loss of composure, many netizens shared their opinions. One said, “Poland already took a point, so for Germany, Zverev had to win this one. Considering his opponent hadn’t played a match in seven months, it’s understandable Zverev struggled to accept it.”

Others commented, “Can’t handle losing! I think he lost the demeanor of a champion.” Another noted, “His mentality is really problematic! When facing adversity, he doesn’t attack or seek solutions, just battles his own emotions. This isn’t the first time he’s shown such extreme mood swings on court, sometimes deeply down, sometimes extremely angry.”
