On January 6th Beijing time, Chinese player Shang Juncheng appeared in the first round of the ATP Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open, where he won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 against Argentine player Comesana, marking a successful opening for the new season. Reviewing the match afterwards, Shang said, “I think I performed very well in this match, although the weather was very cold today, which is not my usual favorite condition or state, but overall I think my performance on court was still quite good.”

Shang Juncheng
This is Shang Juncheng’s third consecutive year starting his season in Hong Kong, and in the past two years, he reached the semifinals at this venue. “Every time I come to Hong Kong, I feel very positive and my form is good. Of course, many fans from the mainland as well as local supporters here cheer for me, so I mainly enjoy playing here and my performance is very good.”
After a season last year plagued by injuries, Shang Juncheng’s current world ranking has fallen outside the top 200, so he can only enter high-level tournaments through wildcards or protected rankings. “Now I am in Hong Kong, the next event will be the Australian Open, then I may return home for some adjustment, (then) participate in the Davis Cup, hoping to represent China; after that, I might go to the Middle East season, followed by the Masters in the U.S. I haven’t planned too far ahead, just about this much.”
“I believe my overall ability can reach a higher level than before, though there are many areas needing improvement and consolidation. Returning to the top 100 or even top 50 is definitely a short-term goal, and I hope to keep getting better. As a young player, I haven’t yet unleashed 100% of my potential, which requires more discussion with my team, playing more matches, gaining experience, and improving myself.”
Regarding the current state of Chinese men’s tennis, Shang Juncheng frankly said everyone is in healthy competition, and it’s normal for any player to win. “Overall, Chinese tennis is moving in the right direction. Many players can compete in ATP events and perform at their best, so I personally think this is a very positive development.”
“I have seen Zhang reach the quarterfinals in a Masters tournament two years ago and perform well at the Olympics. Also, Abing has won a 250-level event, Zhou Yi has defeated former top ten players, and Xiaobu has been stable around the top 100. Last year was tough for everyone, but I think after enduring it, this year will be better and better. These achievements are no joke; everyone has strong ability, so if we seize the right opportunities and matches, we will keep improving.”
