Match Report | WTA Brisbane: Zhang Shuai Fails to Convert Break Lead, Loses to Sabalenka, Missing Out on Round of 16

On January 6th, 2026, the second round of the WTA Brisbane event took place. Chinese star Zhang Shuai, who advanced from the qualifiers, secured an early break in the second set and once led 4-2, but ultimately fell 3-6, 5-7 to Sabalenka. Missing the round of 16, she will next head to the WTA Adelaide tournament to continue her preparation for the Australian Open.

World No.1 Sabalenka unleashed full power in her season debut, winning 11 consecutive games at the start and defeating Spain’s Bouzkova 6-0, 6-1 in just 48 minutes. In the next round, she will face Kostyuk, who overcame Ostapenko 6-2, 7-6(5).

In other matches, 5th seed Keys defeated Kiesler 6-4, 6-3; 7th seed Alexandrova beat Kenin 7-6(2), 6-3; 11th seed Muchova pulled off a thrilling comeback against Tomljanovic 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(5); and 12th seed Schneider won over Potapova 6-1, 6-3, all securing strong starts to the new season.
