On January 6th, 2026, the ATP Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open continued its singles first-round matches. Chinese player Shang Jun Cheng defeated Comesana 6-4, 6-4, while Hong Kong’s Wong Chak Lam beat Navone 6-3, 7-5, both advancing to the second round.

Shang Jun Cheng appeared in the night session. Entering as a wildcard, he faced the current world No. 67 Comesana in the first round, holding a 1-0 head-to-head lead. Hong Kong can be considered one of Shang’s lucky venues; over the past two years, he has reached the singles semifinals here, and his classic three-set battle against eventual champion Rublev in 2024 marked his first ATP Tour singles semifinal experience.
In this match, Shang secured victory in both sets by breaking serve once each time and maintaining his lead steadily. He only gave away one break point opportunity and successfully defended it, ultimately winning 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets. After the match, Shang said: “I always enjoy playing in Hong Kong. I know I can play good tennis here. This season, I don’t feel much pressure and hope to advance further in this tournament.” He also thanked the crowd in Chinese: “I know many fans came from Hong Kong and mainland China, thank you all for your support and for watching my match.”

Wong Chak Lam, who played earlier, had already secured a doubles win yesterday. This is his third consecutive year competing at home in Hong Kong; in the previous two years, he lost to Musetti and Shang Jun Cheng respectively. In this match against world No. 75 Argentine Navone, Wong stayed level at 3-3 in the first set before pulling ahead with three consecutive games to take the set 6-3. In the second set, both players held serve through the first eight games. After being broken in the ninth game, Wong quickly counterattacked with a streak of three games to close out the match 7-5, marking his first singles main draw win in Hong Kong.
Notably, famous Hong Kong singer Eason Chan attended the event to watch Wong’s first-round match. “Playing in front of the home crowd always brings pressure. I’m happy to have passed the first round. Today, I managed my pressure and nerves well,” Wong said. In the next round, he will face his doubles partner Diallo across the net. Talking about his expectations, he added: “Opportunities to play at home are rare. I want to keep winning, and these memories will stay with me forever.”
