Match Report | ATP Hong Kong: Shang Juncheng misses match point, fails to reach semifinals for the third consecutive year

On January 9th Beijing time, the 2026 ATP Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open men's singles quarterfinals unfolded. Chinese athlete Shang Juncheng lost 1-6, 6-7(2) to the event's second seed Bublik, missing out on making the last four at this tournament for the third consecutive year.

In this match, Bublik got off to an early strong start, serving with great power and quickly taking the first set 6-1. The second set was tightly contested, with both players exchanging points and the score leveling at 6-6 after Shang missed a match point in the 12th game. In the tiebreak, Bublik maintained steadier play to clinch the victory and advance to the semifinals.

This loss prevented Shang Juncheng from achieving a "hat-trick," as he failed to reach the ATP Hong Kong Open semifinals for the third year in a row. Their head-to-head record is now tied at 2-2. Notably, Shang defeated Bublik during his title run at the 2024 ATP Chengdu Open. Currently, Shang is ranked No. 311 in the world, while Bublik holds the No. 11 spot.

After the match, Bublik commented on Shang Juncheng: “I know Shang very well, and compared to our previous encounters, he has improved a lot. He was once in the Top 50, and if he stays healthy, I believe he has the potential to break into the Top 20 or even Top 10.”

In other completed matches, top seed Musetti defeated Hong Kong’s Wong Chak Lam 6-4, 6-4, and third seed Rublev eliminated Borges 6-3, 6-4. These two will face each other in a highly anticipated semifinal clash. Bublik’s semifinal opponent will be decided between qualifier Michael Mmoh and Giron.
