It is well known that before every Grand Slam, there are several warm-up tournaments tailored for it. From 2024 to the present, a Chinese player has reached the finals six times in these Grand Slam warm-up events. So, who is this Chinese player? At which Grand Slam warm-ups did she reach the finals? After making the finals, how has her performance been in the Grand Slam events themselves? Today, this article will take you through all of that.

This Chinese player is Guo Hanyu. As early as 2019, she partnered with Ye Qiuyu to win the women’s doubles title at the World University Games. In 2023, Guo Hanyu won the women’s singles championship at the World University Games, becoming the second Chinese player after Li Na to claim the singles title there. Since then, she has drawn the attention of many tennis fans.

In early January 2024, Guo Hanyu teamed up with Jiang Xinyu to compete in the WTA 250 Hobart International. In the first round, they easily defeated the wildcard Australian pair Borovic and Bolton with two 6-2 sets, advancing smoothly. In the second round, despite losing the first set, Guo and Jiang came back to win the next two sets against the top-seeded Japanese player Chihara Ena and American Krawczyk, securing a tough victory. In the semifinals, they beat the fourth-seeded Ukrainian- Kazakh pair Nadiya Kichenok and Anna Danilina in straight sets to reach the final. This marked the beginning of Guo Hanyu’s appearances in tour finals before Grand Slam events. Later that year at the Australian Open doubles, she reached the third round.

In early January 2025, Guo Hanyu partnered with Russian player Panova, and together they won four consecutive matches to claim the women’s doubles title at the WTA 500 Adelaide tournament. Moreover, Guo also competed with Panova at the Australian Open, but this time they were eliminated in the third round of doubles and had to leave the tournament early. In mid-May, Guo teamed up with American player Melichar to reach the final of the WTA 500 Strasbourg tournament, marking her first doubles final at a tour event before the French Open. However, at the French Open itself, Guo unexpectedly exited in the first round of women’s doubles.

Afterwards, Guo Hanyu and Panova reached the women’s doubles finals at the WTA 500 Bad Homburg tournament before Wimbledon 2025 and the WTA 1000 Cincinnati tournament before the US Open. However, they were both knocked out early in the second round at Wimbledon 2025 and the US Open. This week, Guo is partnering with French player Mladenovic as the second seed at the WTA 250 Auckland tournament. In the first round, Guo Hanyu and Mladenovic won in straight sets against the Chinese duo Zheng Saisai and Wang Xinyu, advancing comfortably.

After defeating the Swiss player Riner and Japanese player Aoyama in the second round, Guo and her partner advanced to the women’s doubles final due to the withdrawal of Indonesian player Zeng Limi and American McNally. This marks her sixth time reaching a final in a warm-up event before a Grand Slam since 2024. So, how will Guo perform in the upcoming Grand Slam? Let’s wait and see.
