In the second round of the Australian Open, ten-time champion Djokovic continued his campaign with a dominant performance. The Serbian legend won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, over Francisco Maestrelli, smoothly advancing to the men’s singles third round. Throughout the match, he controlled the pace, moved effortlessly, and executed precise shots.

This marks Djokovic’s 21st appearance at the Australian Open. At 38 years old, he demonstrated highly efficient form. Since claiming his 101st career tour title in Athens last November, this was only his second official match, where he showcased pinpoint shot placement and excellent shot quality, laying a solid foundation for his run in this tournament.
Regarding the court conditions, Djokovic admitted that playing day and night matches felt completely different: “The first-round night match and today’s day match felt like two entirely different contests, especially with the wind in Melbourne this year being stronger than any previous year I’ve played. I had to adapt and adjust, also facing opponents with powerful serves. Overall, I’m satisfied with my movement and shot execution.”

In the opening round, Djokovic reached the milestone of 100 wins at the Australian Open. In this match, he took 47 minutes and faced 7 break points just to secure the first set, after which he dominated baseline rallies. His serving was particularly commanding, with a first-serve win rate of 86% (43 points won on 50 serves), which was key to his victory.
In the first service game of the second set, Djokovic faced two break points but managed to escape by forcing a forehand error from the 23-year-old qualifier Maestrelli. Before the match, the young Italian admitted that playing against the 24-time Grand Slam champion was “one of the most exciting moments of my life.”

With this win, Djokovic’s Grand Slam match victories reached 399, just one away from the 400-win milestone. His third-round opponent will be Van de Zandschulp. Shang Juncheng lost 0-3 to Van de Zandschulp in the second round, missing the chance to face the tennis legend.
If Djokovic wins in the third round, he will become the first player in tennis history to reach400 Grand Slam match victories. It is worth noting that Van de Zandschulp caused an upset by defeating Djokovic last year at the Indian Wells Masters, and their head-to-head record is currently tied at 1-1.
As a tournament favorite, Djokovic’s draw is now clear. He is expected to face Italian player Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals and potentially two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Musetti also advanced to the third round with an impressive performance, beating fellow Italian Sonego 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, matching his best Australian Open result. According to Infosys statistics, the fifth seed created 23 break point opportunities and converted 6 of them. The 23-year-old Italian rising star will next face Czech player Machac.
