The former top Canadian female player now aims to win the Hope tournament; her peak success was back in 2019.

It is well known that tennis is a highly competitive sport. The old saying applies: if you don’t move forward, you regress. There is one player whose brightest days were all in 2019. So, who is this player? What results did she achieve in 2019? And how has she been performing lately? Let this article guide you through.

This player is Canadian Bianca Andreescu. In January 2019, starting from the qualifiers, she won seven consecutive matches to reach her first career final at the WTA250 Auckland event. At that time, even Andreescu herself probably didn’t expect this was just the beginning of her remarkable season. In the same month, she won her first WTA 125 title at the Newport Beach Challenger. Within just one month, she boosted her world ranking by nearly a hundred spots.

The year 2019 continued, and so did Andreescu’s legend. In early March, as a wildcard entrant at the WTA1000 Indian Wells event, she won seven straight matches to claim her first WTA1000 title. She also became the first player in the history of the Indian Wells Open to win the tournament as a wildcard.

In early August, after a six-match winning streak in front of her hometown crowd to capture the Rogers Cup, Andreescu’s confidence peaked. Later that month, she triumphed at the US Open, becoming the first Canadian ever to win a Grand Slam singles title. Moreover, she was the first player born in the 2000s to claim a Grand Slam championship.

However, since then, Andreescu has not won any tour-level titles. From 2022 onwards, she has not reached a tour final in four years. Injuries and fluctuations in her mental state have been the main reasons for her prolonged absence from the spotlight. Recently, with her world ranking having fallen outside the top 200, Andreescu competed in the Bradenton Hope tournament held in the United States.

In the first round, she faced American qualifier M Menguene. In the opening set, Andreescu faced tough resistance and was pushed to a tiebreak. Fortunately, she bravely fought through to take the set 7–5, gaining an early advantage. However, a confident Menguene bounced back in the second set, winning 6–2 and forcing a deciding set, threatening a major upset. Luckily, Andreescu adjusted well in the final set, closing it out 6–3 to secure her first win of the 2026 season.

In the second round, Andreescu defeated British player E McDonald 6–4, 6–3 to reach the quarterfinals; in the quarterfinals, she dominated Italian T Pieri 6–2, 6–1 to advance to the semifinals; in the semis against American L Ma, Andreescu allowed only one game, sweeping her opponent to reach the final.

In the final, Andreescu’s opponent was American V Wolff. After taking the first set 6–2 and standing just one step from the title, Andreescu faced a tough battle in the second set but ultimately closed the match 7–5 to claim her first championship of the 2026 season. Notably, this was her first title in six years.

However, it is somewhat poignant that a player who once won WTA1000 and Grand Slam titles is now competing in a Hope tournament. So, is this 2026 Hope tournament victory a new beginning for Andreescu’s comeback, or just a brief flash of former glory? Can she return to the top of the tour and even challenge for Grand Slam titles again? Let’s wait and see. That’s the tennis story for today; more to come tomorrow.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Yixin Jushi)
