Diego Schwarzman may be playing his final event, but buoyed by an enthusiastic crowd in Buenos Aires, including many emotional family members, Schwartzman defeated seventh seed Nicholas Jarry 7-6(10)/4-6/6-3 to advance to the second round.
The former ATP No. 8 winner won Buenos Aires in 2021 and has won the most of any player this year (17). In the first round of the showdown with Jarry, Schwartzman led the atmosphere and enjoyed the atmosphere created by the full crowd in the Argentine capital. The victory, which took 2 hours and 52 minutes, was his first victory on the ATP Tour since the tournament in Tokyo in September 2023.
Schwartzman admits: "To be honest, I thought I was going to lose. After months of absence, I made my comeback in Rosario last week against the (eventual) champion Camilo Hugo Carabelli and I played great tennis. I didn't expect to win [against Jarry]. I played well, created a lot of good chances, he was a little nervous and I took my chances in the third set. I thought I would cry for a while after the game and I was ready to get emotional, but I didn't expect it to be because I won. ”
Schwartzman deftly defused Jarry's powerful shots and capitalized on the Chilean's ups and downs. At 2.01 meters, Jarry is a cut taller than Schwartzman, and he made 79 unforced errors in this match.
Schwarzman continues his farewell journey against Martinez in the next round. The situation is the same as when French player Simon retired, and the first game may not be the last.
