The French Open this year is sure to see a brand-new winner.
The second Grand Slam of the year — the 2026 Roland Garros has entered its final stages. After thrilling matches with unpredictable and dramatic developments, the eight best players have secured their spots in the men's and women's singles semifinals.
In the men's singles, the top title contender — Alexander Zverev proved his class with a straight-sets victory over young talent Rafael Jodar. The rain in Paris forced the Philippe Chatrier court to close its roof, which gave Zverev certain advantages.
Theoretically, indoor courts increase ball speed, but due to rain, humidity is high, making the ball slower and heavier, resulting in more rallies. In terms of endurance and experience in Grand Slam five-set matches, Sascha completely dominated his young opponent.
Zverev struggled in the first set as Jodar took a 5-2 lead, but the German broke his opponent's crucial service game, turning the tide. The next two sets were entirely dominated by the 2024 Roland Garros runner-up.
Zverev's next opponent on his quest for his first career Grand Slam will be Jakub Mensik, who impressively defeated Joao Fonseca in straight sets. It may sound like a one-sided match for the Czech player, but in reality the match was quite balanced; Fonseca played well, but Mensik was simply better and more composed in crucial moments.
An interesting match between two players with quite similar styles: good serves, excellent backhands, but slightly problematic forehands. In their meeting at this year's Madrid Open, Zverev had to struggle hard to get past Mensik in three sets.
The other semifinal will be an all-Italian match between Flavio Cobolli and Matteo Arnaldi. Cobolli overcame fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, while Arnaldi advanced after his compatriot Berrettini retired in the second set.
In the women's singles, the battle among Eastern European players ended with a major surprise. Top seed Aryna Sabalenka lost in a comeback defeat to Diana Shnaider, losing the deciding set 0-6. After the match, the Belarusian player was unhappy that the organizers did not close the roof despite strong winds.
The upset at Philippe Chatrier helped the Russian player reach her first Grand Slam singles semifinal. Shnaider's opponent — Maja Chwalinska has an even more remarkable journey: ranked outside the world's top 100, she started from qualifying and then defeated a series of big names like Zheng Qinwen, Elise Mertens, Maria Sakkari, and Anna Kalinskaya.
The other semifinal will be a very watchable match between two players from Russia and Ukraine: Mirra Andreeva - Marta Kostyuk. Kostyuk has defeated Andreeva twice this year, and the Ukrainian beauty's winning percentage on clay this season remains... 100%.
The Roland Garros 2026 semifinals will take place starting from the evening of June 4th, Vietnam time.
