The Vietnamese tennis squad is a prime contender for... dropping down in the 2026 Davis Cup Group III for the Asia-Oceania region.
The Vietnam national tennis team faced its second consecutive loss at the 2026 Davis Cup Group III of the Asia-Oceania zone, currently being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from July 15 to 18.
After a 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in the opening match, Vietnam had to face another strong opponent — Iran. With the rule of playing two singles matches first followed by the doubles match, we needed at least one singles win to keep hope alive for an upset against Iran in the decisive doubles match — where Nguyen Minh Phat and Nguyen Dai Khanh put on an impressive performance yesterday, July 15.
However, similar to the series against Saudi Arabia, the Davis Cup Vietnam team collapsed right after the first two singles matches. As usual, Pham La Hoang Anh took the lead, but this young player seems not to have fully recovered from the injury sustained during his match against Saud Alhogbani yesterday afternoon. Hoang Anh suffered a heavy loss of 0-6, 1-6 against Sina Moghimi (world rank 1,698), putting even more pressure on Vu Ha Minh Duc in the remaining singles match.
Minh Duc had to face an enormous obstacle in Ali Yazdani — a player ranked in the world's top 1,000. Vietnam's number one player was quickly overwhelmed; his efforts only helped him avoid a 0-6 set loss. In the second set, Minh Duc remained completely passive against Yazdani's strength, ultimately accepting a 0-2 defeat with set scores of 2-6 and 2-6.
The remaining doubles match between Minh Phat/Dai Khanh and Samyar Elyasi/Yunes Talavar only served to determine the margin of victory.
The Vietnamese tennis team must defeat Malaysia in the remaining Group III matches if they want to avoid being relegated to Group IV next season. The host team lost 1-2 to Iran in their opening match and have already lost the first singles match in their tie against Saudi Arabia.
