Destroying Indonesia's pride, "Russian Princess" starts dream at US Open

Mirra Andreeva opened her US Open campaign with a dominant win over Janice Tjen. Her superior power and precision allowed the Roland Garros champion to concede only four games to the Indonesian opponent on Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Andreeva turned the tide with a powerful forehand to break and take a 3-2 lead in the first set. From that point, the fifth seed completely controlled the match. The Russian player won the next three games in a row, closing the opening set 6-2 in just 31 minutes. Her aggressive play kept Tjen constantly on the defensive, unable to find a way back.

Andreeva continued to increase the intensity in the second set. She broke early, maintained a one-sided match, and then won another 6-2 to complete a convincing opening performance.

The two players had met in Cincinnati a month earlier, and Andreeva had also won. However, the Roland Garros champion admitted that this rematch was significantly easier.

"The match in Cincinnati was really tough because of the hot weather and high humidity. It was also my first time facing her. Janice is not an easy opponent. I talked with my coach to find things I could do better and to help myself feel confident on the court. I tried to play aggressively, taking the initiative with my shots.", Andreeva shared.

Andreeva entered the US Open with a completely different status compared to her previous appearances. This year's Roland Garros title made her the third youngest player to win a women's singles Grand Slam in the 21st century, after Maria Sharapova and Emma Raducanu.

The success in Paris also brought greater expectations for the 19-year-old. Andreeva revealed that she regularly talks with a sports psychologist to avoid being affected by the pressure of her first Grand Slam title.

"I've talked a lot with my psychologist and tried to see Roland Garros as a tournament I've won, rather than letting the Grand Slam title create extra pressure. The victory in Paris was wonderful, but now I want to put it aside to focus on showing my best form and conquering the US Open.", Andreeva shared.

The "second Sharapova" admitted that the status of a Grand Slam champion raises expectations from outside and demands on herself. The US Open is still a major tournament where Andreeva has never reached the round of 16.

In her first two appearances in 2023 and 2024, the Russian player stopped in the second round, losing to Coco Gauff and Ashlyn Krueger respectively. Andreeva improved her performance by reaching the third round in 2025, but surprisingly lost to Taylor Townsend 5-7, 2-6.
