After the French Open, the 2025 grass court season begins next week.
Zverev, Fritz and Medvedev will be at the Liberma Open in Stuttgart and 's-Hertogenbosch respectively this week.
With the start of the ATP Tour grass-court season, this week's BOSS Open (ATP 250) in Stuttgart and the Liberma Open (ATP 250) in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, take place simultaneously. Zverev and Fritz will lead the German line-up, while Medvedev and Amber will be the top two seeds in the Netherlands.
Here are the five highlights of the two races.
1. Zverev's home comeback:Zverev made his debut in Stuttgart since 2019 and the 28-year-old is fresh off the quarter-finals at the French Open and is looking to make a smooth transition to grass. He has won 24 tournaments in his career, but has yet to win a grass-court season. As the top seed, he will face Mutai or 2013 champion Fognini in the first round. Fognini received a wild card.
2. Can Fritz regain form:Fritz's form has been up and down this season, with a shock defeat to Germany's Artemeier in the first round of the French Open. As the No.2 seed in the tournament, he's eager to get back into form on grass.
3. Sheldon, Aliassime's Challenge:Ben Shelton went 4-4 on grass last season, including a first-round exit from Stuttgart, and as the No. 3 seed this year, he will play De Zuch or qualifier in his first match. Aliassime has reached the finals of this tournament twice (2019, 2021) and also exited in the first round of the French Open. Hopefully in better shape during the grass season.
4. New generation of rising stars debut:19-year-old Lernachanti and 17-year-old Justin Engel both made their Stuttgart debuts. Lenacin had never made his debut on grass at tour or Challenger level before, and Germany's Engel was a wild card to face a qualifier in the first round.
5. Men's Doubles local pairs win the championship:Germany's Kevin Kravitz/Tim Puitz will be aiming for their first title of the season at home soil. Singles star Fritz will also partner Lehecka in doubles.
1. Medvedev looks for a form pick-up:Medvedev moved to grass after a shock first-round defeat to Cameron Norrie at the French Open, and as the top seed at the tournament, he will be hoping to add another grass win after winning in Mallorca in 2021. He has a 18-11 record this season and is currently ranked 11th in the world.
2. Amber returns from injury:France's Amber has been plagued by injuries this season, and retired in the second round of the French Open due to a sprained ankle. The 26-year-old Amber will open his bout against Australia's Rin Toki or qualifier.
3. The local wildcard becomes the Dutch hope:Jesper de Jong and Van der Shanschulp continued the strong run of Dutch players with wild cards – Taren Grykspoor in 2023 and Tim van Rithöfen in 2022.
4. The new generation of players Barcelona Valedi was shortlisted:Nishesh Basavaredi is eligible for the "New Wild Card NG" (one ATP 250 main draw per year for players under the age of 21 in the world's top 250). The 20-year-old American has never stepped foot on grass at tour or Challenger level.
5. Men's Doubles:Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus are the top seeds in the doubles, and the pair have won the title in Auckland this season. Second seeds Julian Cash/Lloyd Glasspool topped in Brisbane and Doha.
