After the conclusion of Wimbledon, this week's tour is relatively quiet compared to before, with only a few 250-level events taking place simultaneously. However, next week, the North American hard court season will kick off in full swing, starting with the Washington event, which is a 500-level tournament.
In women's singles, the current world number six, Zheng Qinwen, was originally on the entry list, but she ultimately chose to withdraw from this event. Her first match after exiting Wimbledon will be the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal, scheduled for July 27 (this event is also experiencing a wave of withdrawals, including the current world number one in women's singles, Sabalenka, as well as Badosa, Jabeur, and Kontaveit).
Badosa and Anisimova have also announced their withdrawals from this event. The Washington tournament and the Montreal tournament are only one day apart. Currently, the top seed for the Washington event remains Pegula, with Navarro, Rybakina, and Alexandrova following her. These four players are expected to be the top four seeds in the tournament.
Additionally, Naomi Osaka, Raducanu, and local star Venus Williams are also on the main draw list.
Chinese player Zhang Shuai is currently the second alternate for the qualifiers, while Wei Sijia is the third alternate. So far, only the doubles pairs Jiang Xinyu/Zhan Haoqing and Xu Yifan/Yang Zhaoxuan have confirmed their participation in this event.
Looking ahead to the Montreal tournament where Zheng Qinwen will compete, she is expected to enter as the eighth seed and will receive a first-round bye (this tournament has expanded to 96 entries).
Despite withdrawing from the Washington tournament, there are still Chinese players competing on the tour this week. Bu Yunchaokete is participating as the sixth seed in the singles event in Los Cabos. After winning her opening match against local qualifier Magadan with a score of 7-6(5) 6-2, she faced a tough second-round match where she squandered a 6-2 lead in the deciding set tiebreak, ultimately losing 6-3 5-7 6-7(6) to American player Nava, missing out on the quarterfinals.
Next, Nava will compete against the tournament's top seed, Rublev, who defeated local wildcard player Hernandez in straight sets.
Veteran Zhang Shuai has registered for the Nottingham W50 event this week and has already secured two consecutive victories to reach the women's singles quarterfinals. This event is of a lower level, and having already earned 11 points and $1,069 in prize money, the Chinese player is looking to advance further.
Transitioning from the grass season to hard courts, Zhang Shuai's choice to participate in a lower-level event is a smart move, and we hope to see more Chinese players achieving victories on the professional circuit.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Barbie)
