Recently, former world No. 6 Polish tennis player Hubert Hurkacz, in an interview with Tennis365 during an Adidas event in London, drew comparisons between current tennis stars Sinner and Alcaraz and the "Big Four" (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray), attracting attention.
As a player who has faced the "Big Four" multiple times and has had several encounters with Sinner and Alcaraz in recent years, Hurkacz's perspective is quite insightful. He stated that the level of tennis is improving every year, and the current standards are higher than a decade ago, with Sinner and Alcaraz continuously raising the bar with their exceptional performances. He said:
“They have set very high goals, which is exactly the direction we should be pursuing,” Hurkacz admitted, noting that this is also one of the motivations for his rigorous training.
However, Hurkacz also made an important clarification: the higher level of tennis today does not mean that the "Big Four" couldn't compete at this level. “They were also improving year by year, constantly raising the standards, and if they were still playing now, they would definitely continue to elevate their game.” He also believes, “It’s hard to say who would win when everyone is at their best.”
This viewpoint echoes previous comments made by John McEnroe. During the French Open, McEnroe claimed that Sinner and Alcaraz have the potential to excel on Nadal's preferred clay courts and stated that the current level of tennis is the highest he has ever seen. Despite McEnroe's remarks facing criticism from several tennis commentators, Hurkacz believes his statements “are not without merit.”
Previously, Hurkacz withdrew from Wimbledon due to injury. After a year of declining rankings due to injuries, Hurkacz is now focusing on the North American hard court season, expressing that he still has ambitions to win all Grand Slams. Additionally, the inclusion of eight-time Grand Slam championIvan Lendland Olympic doubles gold medalistNicolas Massuin his team also demonstrates his determination to return to the top.
What do you think about the currentdebate on whether Sinner and Alcaraz have reached or surpassed the peak of the "Big Four"? Who has the most authority to speak on this? I believe it should be Djokovic, followed by Zverev and Medvedev.
