In July 2025, Chinese rising tennis star Shang Juncheng will make his comeback after injury at the National Bank Open in Toronto. This player, who once reached a career-high ATP ranking of 47, has been absent from the court for six months due to pain in his right foot.
Earlier this year, signs of his foot injury became apparent—he withdrew from the semifinals in Hong Kong and left the Australian Open after playing just two sets in the first round. Initially, his team thought it was just a bone bruise, but after a month of persistent pain and experiencing nighttime resting pain, he realized the seriousness of the issue. On March 5, he underwent foot surgery and subsequently entered the rehabilitation phase.
“After the surgery, aside from the wound, the pain basically disappeared,” Shang Juncheng recalled. During his recovery period, he rested in Florida, not only improving his golf skills but also revisiting the Harry Potter series, watching the movies and reading the original books. More importantly, he spent quality time with his family. With the help of his therapist Charlie, his recovery progressed smoothly.
In early April, he picked up the racket again, and by the time of the French Open, he had completely overcome the pain. “Being able to play happily on the court is more important than the results,” he said. This Sunday’s match against a qualifying player will be his sixth event of the season.
Speaking about his return, Shang Juncheng, with a beaming smile, couldn’t hide his excitement: “The rhythm of the tour is very special, and it feels great to make my comeback at a Masters 1000 event in Toronto.”
