The 2025 US Open qualifying event kicked off on August 18 local time. On day one, three Chinese mainland athletes competed: Wang Xiyu and Sun Fajing advanced, while Gao Xingyu exited the tournament.
Wang Xiyu
Seeded 31st in the women’s singles, Wang Xiyu rallied from behind to overcome Canadian Branstine 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, earning a spot against Martic in the next round. Sun Fajing saved match point while trailing 2-5 in the second set, forcing a decider, and with a 3-6, 7-6(5), 4-1 lead, his opponent Martin Tiffon retired, giving Sun his first Grand Slam qualifying win. He will next face South African star L. Harris. Gao Xingyu fell 2-6, 1-6 to the 11th seed Masinko, ending her run.
Today, 9th seed Zhang Shuai will play Stoyana on Court 12, Wei Sijia will face Gengiz on Court 7, and Wu Yibing will challenge 17th seed Fikovic on Court 16.
