Vietnam Volleyball is weighing the option of sending a youth team to take part in the 2026 Asian U18 Championships.
According to the 2026 competition schedule set by the Federation Volleyball in Asia, the Asian U18 Women's Championship will be held in Thailand from July 1 to 7, while the U18 Men's Championship will take place in Bahrain from July 12 to 18.
A representative from the Vietnam Volleyball Federation told the press that participation will depend on the specific professional plans of the men's and women's team coaching staff.
The Federation will work directly with the head coaches to assess the team's strength, preparation readiness, and long-term goals, then make an appropriate decision.
The general consensus is to prioritize providing international competition opportunities for young athletes, but it must be aligned with a clear development roadmap.
In recent years, Vietnamese youth volleyball has made notable progress by participating in continental tournaments. In 2024, both the men's and women's youth teams competed in the Asian U20 Championship.
From that tournament, the Vietnamese women's youth team earned the right to participate in the 2025 U21 World Championship, marking the first time Vietnamese youth volleyball secured an official spot on the world stage.
The benefits of international youth competitions have been clearly demonstrated as some athletes developed through the youth training system have continued to join the national team.
At the 33rd SEA Games, many players who previously competed in Asian youth tournaments were given opportunities and contributed to the overall success of the women's national team.
In 2026, the Federation of Volleyball Vietnam will also enter the preparation phase for the new term congress. Youth training will be comprehensively evaluated, including the domestic competition system and the effectiveness of sending teams to international tournaments.
The long-term goal remains to build a strong successor force, ensuring a smooth transition for the national teams in the coming years.
