Despite a remarkable effort, Ma Minh Cam was unable to claim the championship in stage 7 of the PBA Tour 2025-2026.

Top Vietnamese player Ma Minh Cam lost 2-4 to Spanish star Daniel Sanchez in the final of stage 7 of the Korean professional carom 3-cushion billiards tournament (PBA) for the 2025-2026 season. Before the final, Ma Minh Cam’s average score was only 1.3. Facing one of the world’s best carom 3-cushion players, he played over 100% of his capacity, achieving an average of 1.9 after 6 sets. However, the Vietnamese cueist still couldn’t secure his second PBA stage title as he did back in 2022. Daniel Sanchez started extremely well with precision shots like clockwork, while Ma Minh Cam had an unfavorable start in sets 1 and 2, losing by wide margins of 6-15 and 4-15 respectively. Despite being at a significant disadvantage (the match is best of 7 sets, first to 4 wins) down 0-2 to the Spaniard, Ma Minh Cam played excellently in the next three sets. Unfortunately, he lacked a bit of composure and luck on the crucial final shots, allowing Daniel Sanchez to make a comeback even when Ma Minh Cam was close to victory. In set 3, Ma Minh Cam performed brilliantly with flawless shots, defeating Daniel Sanchez 15-7. In set 4, he continued his strong play, leading 14-12 and needing just one more point to tie the match at 2-2, but the 1975-born player failed to close the set, letting Sanchez score consecutively to win 15-14 and take a 3-1 lead. In set 5, Ma Minh Cam played well again, leading 14-11. Although the Spaniard managed to equalize at 14-14, Ma Minh Cam successfully finished the deciding point to win 15-14, narrowing the final score to 2-3. Unfortunately, in the pivotal set, Ma Minh Cam couldn’t maintain his high level of play. While Daniel Sanchez continued to deliver precise shots like programmed, the Vietnamese player’s shots lacked strength or accuracy, allowing Sanchez to extend his lead and ultimately win 15-4, securing a 4-2 overall victory and the stage 7 championship of the PBA Tour 2025-2026, with Ma Minh Cam finishing as runner-up. After defeat, the snooker world’s magician angrily criticized the schedule as 'disrespectful'

Shaun Murphy, the former 2005 world snooker champion, fiercely condemned the organizers of the Champion of Champions tournament after being informed he had to compete in England just hours after returning from China. Murphy, 43, had just taken part in the International Championship in Nanjing, China, where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the legendary John Higgins. Following that, Murphy and his fiancée Jo embarked on a journey lasting over 36 hours back to England, involving a domestic flight to Beijing, a taxi ride through rush hour, then a flight from Beijing to Dubai, before connecting to Manchester, England. Before he could rest, while on the plane, Murphy used wifi to check his phone and was shocked to receive notice that he was scheduled to play at 1 pm on Monday—less than 48 hours after leaving China—in Group 2 of the Champion of Champions held in Leicester, England. Shaun Murphy’s travel itinerary before returning to England for the "Champion of Champions" event. Exhausted from jet lag and lack of sleep, Murphy lost 1-4 to the Scotland Open champion, Lei Peifan, in his opening match. Immediately after the game, he openly expressed his outrage live on ITV4: "I always strive to act professionally and respect this sport. But the way Matchroom treated me at this event is disgraceful. I only found out I had to play today while in the middle of a 36-hour journey from China—just 48 hours before the match. Meanwhile, three other players like Mark Williams, Mark Allen, and Alfie Burden, who didn’t even participate in the China tournament, were scheduled to play later. This is unreasonable and disrespectful. Such handling is unacceptable." Murphy further emphasized that he has worked with Matchroom for over 30 years and has never witnessed such "unprofessionalism" before. "I don’t even know where I am, what I’m wearing, or what day it is. Yet they expect me to perform like a world-class player—it’s outrageous." In response to the backlash, Matchroom Sport—the organizer of the Champion of Champions—quickly issued a statement. A Matchroom representative confirmed that the match groups were arranged according to seed rankings, denying any "manual selection" of players as Murphy alleged. "We spoke with Shaun after the match and fully understand his frustration. Scheduling is always a challenge each year, but we are committed to reviewing and improving it in the future. All players are seeded to ensure transparency and fairness," the Matchroom representative said. The organizers also noted they considered that two Scottish players, Stephen Maguire and John Higgins, had similarly long journeys from China to England. The "Champion of Champions" is a prestigious tournament featuring the world’s top 16 players, but according to Murphy, "if fairness is overlooked, this title loses its true meaning." The 2025 VBSF National Pool & Snooker Championship concluded in Hanoi after several days of intense competition, featuring 573 top players from across the country. Demonstrating composure and consistent performance, the Hanoi player decisively defeated his opponent with a score of 7-3, reaffirming his status as a seasoned and resilient competitor. This win not only marked his second time reaching the national top podium but also showcased the enduring stamina and boundless passion of an athlete approaching 50. Dương Quốc Hoàng suffered an unbelievable defeat in the opening match of the Philippines Open 2025.

A single slip on the 9-ball caused Vietnam’s top billiards pool player, Dương Quốc Hoàng, affectionately known as "Hoàng Sao" by fans, to be eliminated in the first round of the Philippines Open 2025, in what was considered the biggest upset since the tournament began. On the afternoon of October 21 (Hanoi time), Dương Quốc Hoàng faced the home player Eric Navarette – a lesser-known but very experienced local competitor. The match started poorly for Hoàng as he fell behind 8-3. However, the composure and experience of the Reyes Cup 2025 champion allowed him to fight back strongly. Precise shots and excellent cue ball control helped Hoàng Sao to level at 8-8 and even take the lead 9-8, needing just one more rack to advance. But the bitter turning point came at the crucial moment. In the "hill-hill" rack, when Navarette missed the chance to pocket the 9-ball, Dương Quốc Hoàng had a golden opportunity to close out the match. Unfortunately, his decisive shot narrowly missed the pocket, leaving the Manila audience almost silent. Navarette then calmly finished the game, sealing a dramatic 10-9 victory. Dương Quốc Hoàng couldn’t hide his sadness after the heartbreaking loss in his opening match at the Philippines Open 2025. Photo: Matchroom Pool. Notably, Eric Navarette is not among the top-ranked players in the Philippines. He is better known as a billiards club owner and taxi driver in his hometown. Nevertheless, his confidence, fighting spirit, and the passionate support from the crowd helped him create the tournament’s biggest shock. Unlike many WNT system events with winners and losers brackets, the Philippines Open 2025 used a single-elimination format. This meant that the 9-10 loss ended Dương Quốc Hoàng’s journey after just one match. This defeat came only days after Hoàng and the Asian team successfully defended their Reyes Cup 2025 title with a resounding 11-3 win over the World team. At that time, the Quảng Ninh native played brilliantly, notably defeating top American player Skyler Woodward, helping Asia secure the win early. Therefore, Dương Quốc Hoàng’s loss at the Philippines Open was deeply regretted by many fans. On billiards forums, numerous comments suggested that "just a bit more composure and luck" could have led to a spectacular comeback by Hoàng Sao. So far, the 9-10 result of Dương Quốc Hoàng is considered the biggest surprise of the Philippines Open 2025. Meanwhile, other strong players like Fedor Gorst, Jonas Souto, Michael Feliciano, Anton Raga, Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, and Mickey Krause have all advanced to the next rounds. See more billiards news.
